Turmeric (Haldi)
This spice is from the rhizome of a plant and part of the ginger family which is native to India. It can be bought fresh but it is more commonly sold when dried and ground to a powder. Turmeric has an earthy flavour and is available in most Asian shops and supermarkets.
Turmeric is normally used in Indian food but in small quantities. It should not be used as an alternative to saffron as it has an entirely different flavour as well as colour; saffron gives a golden glow whereby turmeric has a very strong yellow colour which can stain work surfaces and clothes.
